Simon and Seaforts Kentucky Derby Party

By  |

For for all intents and purposes, Saturday was race day!!
We were able to join Simon and Seaforts for a unique Southern tradition, Alaskan style… The 141st running of the Kentucky Derby. And even if you’re not into horse-racing, there was plenty of other things to appreciate, specifically the fashion. (We were in love with all of the hats and bow-ties, classic.)

The boozy mint juleps, was a delightful kick to the afternoon (“You say its only 11am ole boy? Pour me another.”) And of course the food. Simons prepared a special “Derby” menu for the days event. Among the items were the Shrimp & Grits Cakes and the Kentucky Hot Brown. We had the kitchen fix us up a Kentucky Hot brown (its an open faced turkey sandwich) “We do declare… this was a mighty tasty”.

But let’s face it: The winners of this race are the hats — Big, personalized and often show stealing, everyone looked amazing… and the Alaskan weather threw us another surprise with a spectacular warm and sunny backdrop.

So who won the race? The 2015 Kentucky Derby was won on Saturday by American Pharoah, beating Firing Line by one length and Dortmund by three lengths for the first leg of the Triple Crown.

American Pharoah had 3-1 odds to win the race, and won Saturday with a great stretch run.

Did you watch the Kentucky Derby? Have you been to a Derby Party before? Ever had a Mint Julep? What menu item would you try from the menu? Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments below.
