Big Spawn Concert Series feat. American Authors & Kongos

Amidst all the excitement, you could almost forget that it was a blistering 68 degree summer day, in Anchorage, Alaska. How lucky did we get? The music started playing right around 7pm with a sun set on playing peek-a-boo from behind scattered clouds throughout the evening… “The weathers gunna hold”, you could feel something special was happening. We’re going to have a concert today!

The Humpys Big Spawn Concert series kicked off its first big performance since its inaugural show last year in a big way. 3 bands, 2 of which shared the headlining spot, American Authors and the “Come with me now” crooners Kongos. More exciting than that, each band boasted a top 40 single and both had new major label releases on its way. The third was local sensation The Modern Savage, who with a new project in the works as well –  were no strangers to the big Alaskan outdoor crowds.

The team over at Humpys has made quite a name for themselves with the conception of the Big Spawn Concert Series. In an industry previously dominated by Mooses Tooth and the Alaska State Fair, the Big Spawn Concert Series burst onto the outdoor music scene, booking relatively unheard of up and coming alternative bands like Capital Cities, Young Blood Hawk, and Grouplove. The formula once again proved successful with this years rising stars American Authors and Kongos.

One of the major differences the Big Spawn Concert Series offers is not only its shows, but its venue. Located in Downtown Anchorage, the concert exists in, on any other day a busy 4th avenue street. Saddled in between Humpys, Subzero and Flattop PizzaHumpys new establishment Williwaw, proudly rises up against the opposing side, creating a entertainment mecca reminiscent of a big city metropolitan area.

Staging provided by Creative lighting and Sound boomed throughout the humid summer evening. Both Kongos and American Authors made light work of drawing in the concert crowd and seemingly winning them over with repetitious choruses and high energy tempos.

American Authors front-man Zac Barnett even made an appoint to come down off stage and perform from the security gate, close enough for fans from the front row could reach out and touch him. “Sing with me”, he prompted the crowd as he taught them the lyrics “Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey…” 2, 3, 4 “Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey” the 2000 plus in attendance sang back in unison.

In the end, both bands ended their sets with gracious good byes and thanks, being that it had been a first to Alaska for both bands. The Modern Savage can be seen again with an upcoming performance as opening act for Jane’s Addiction, July 25th. The American Authors have a video and new singleGo Big or Go Home available on iTunes now. And Kongos is currently on tour supporting their album Lunatic which can be streamed on Spotify.
